Biography
“I thought moving to Massachusetts to work for Seven Cycles was going to be a two-year adventure. I’m going on 7-years—it must be a pretty good adventure.”
How I got to Seven Cycles is kind of a funny story. I’m not originally from the cycling industry, but have always been into bikes. The exhilaration and freedom of pedaling has always put a smile on my face. So, when I was miserable one day at my dead-end dot-com job in Austin, Texas, I opened up Monster.com with no expectations. Dreaming of moving far away from boy problems, work that I loathed, and near poverty level paychecks, I decided I would search Monster.com for jobs in Boston, Seattle, San Francisco, Denver, and Portland. I started with Boston on that fateful day in 2002. There, on the first page of my Boston search, was a posting for an Account Executive position at Seven Cycles. Hmmm. Interesting. With a quick cover letter and resume submitted, 2 months of interviews both phone and face-to-face, and as they say, whoever they are, the rest is history.
It’s hard to believe that there is a life beyond the bike, but I do enjoy a few other things. I’m an avid yogi. I pretend to be a runner. Though a fair weather rider, I love pedaling around Boston on my fixed gear. I’m a fair weather rider because I am a Texan, born and bred. What can I say? You can take the girl out of Texas, but you can’t take Texas out of the girl! I fancy myself a recreational gourmet cook (I am building a blog for all my favorite recipes:
jennarate.blogspot.com. I love a fancy glass of wine as much as a cold Coors Light. You could also find me in a dark crowded venue to see the latest indie rock band.

Frequently Asked Questions about my job at Seven
How often do you travel?
Recent retailer visits include trips to Salt Lake City, Austin, Seattle, Germany, London, San Francisco, and Houston.
Do you get to ride a lot because of your job?
I don’t ride much as you might expect. My role at Seven is to connect with our retailers and help generate more business for Seven. Most of this happens at Seven, over the phone, thus not leaving too much extra time to ride during the day. When I travel, it is usually to visit multiple shops for a limited amount of time. Again, there’s not much time scheduled to go out and ride.
