After five rounds of World Cup racing, Mary McConneloug (Team Kenda-Seven) has overcome the first hurdle in achieving her goal of a nomination to the 2008 Olympic team: she is the number-two ranked American woman after the five qualifying races. Though a final decision won’t come until after this coming weekend’s World Championships in Italy, all indications at this time are that McConneloug and Georgia Gould (Luna) will be selected for the coveted two spots on the U.S. women’s XC mountain bike racing roster.
Should Mary be selected, this will be her second nomination to the Olympics-her first being the 2004 games in Athens, Greece where she finished a strong 9th place. No other American woman in her event has ever been selected to the Olympics more than once.
