Mike and Mary’s (Continuing) Awesome Adventure

Mike Broderick going fast on his Seven Sola PRO

When last we checked in on our erstwhile heroes, they were at MTB nationals in Pennsylvania. Since then they’ve been to race the World Cup at Mont Ste. Anne in Quebec on their custom IMX 29 SLs and are now, briefly, at home for a week of rest before heading to South Africa for more World Cup at Pietermaritzburg. Part of really appreciating the effort these guys put in to compete at the elite level is understanding that most of their exploits are based from an RV. They rarely sleep in their own beds, and have elevated mobile mechanic/office/home living to an art form.

Mike and Mary have also been selected to the US National Team for XC World Championships again, so we can look forward to more amazing stories from Team Kenda/Seven/NoTubes. We are proud, as always, to be represented by such amazing athletes (and people).

Summer Seven Style

Riders in the sun

We rolled thirteen deep, our course winding seventy miles north and west of our Watertown home. It featured a variety of classic New England highlights like olde town centres and ice cream parlors, lakes and rivers, farms and country stores, cows and chickens, hawks and herons, mountains and views. And best of all, a company picnic and camping at the finish!

It has been a big, big year for us here at Seven. We’ve worked hard. So, for the first time in years we decided to have a non-holiday party, simply for the sake of enjoying the weather, a long ride, and each other’s company.

There are several camping trips in the folklore of the company. Senior Seveneers have long alluded to these trips of yesteryear, but until last weekend, the young ‘uns could not relate.

We were excited as we left the Boston-area. We had no idea what to expect, even as pavement gave way to dirt, as we crossed into New Hampshire, as the road turned up and up and up. And when we arrived thirsty and exhausted, we found that a dedicated few had arrived early and prepped the food, grills, chairs, darts, horseshoes, and quite lite rally every other amenity a party-goer could want. Our fatigue quickly faded.  Every few minutes people would arrive, by bike or by car, until every chair was filled.

Based on the laughter and smiles it was clear that the company, as a whole, was looking to cut loose and relax. Kids scrambled in and out of the circle. People left for short hikes and took naps in the hammock. By 6:00 there were three grills cranking out burgers, dogs, kebabs, and plumes of smoke.  Tents were set up and as the cool mountain air descended upon us, the bonfire was lit.

It carried us to midnight.

It’s no secret that we have a pretty special group here at Seven. That more than half of us rode our bikes the 70 miles (and some rode further), tells you all you need to know about who we are and what we do. These would be our sixth and seventh consecutive days together, but the only arguments we managed were over horseshoes.

Around Lake Michigan

Matt Bosman poses in front of Lake MichiganLast year, Seven-rider Matt Bosman road his Axiom SL around Lake Michigan in 10 days to raise money for World Bicycle Relief. As a maiden voyage, it was successful. He made it home again after 998.8 miles, and he raised over $3000.

Lake Michigan Route

This year, he is expanding on that great start, adding a few more miles (just for fun) and changing the route a little. This year’s ride will take place August 30 – September 7, and we are proud to have such a dedicated rider, and humanitarian, on a Seven for the trip.

You can contribute to World Bicycle Relief by visiting his donation page.

And, you can follow his progress via twitter @mattbosman and via his Seven.

Mark S’s Cafe Racer S

Marc's Cafe Racer S

This is the Cafe Racer S we built for Mark, our friend from Calgary’s Bow Cycle. Though conceived as a simple machine, a fixed-gear with a stripped down look, he took the time to personalize it in a way that makes it one of our favorite bikes of the season. And he also sent us these awesome pictures of it on the streets of Calgary (courtesy of Kevin Kwan), including this one of him getting just a little bit rad.

Good Bye, July

Whiteboard with the words 'cold stuff in freezer/cooler/fridge. Don't die.'

July of 2013 will go on record as one of the hottest months in Boston (and Watertown) history, a fact that didn’t escape us as we spent the month building bikes at full tilt and trying to fit rides in before and after work.

Hopefully August will see temperatures, inside and out, that are a little more conducive to hard work.

We are, gratefully, very busy and sending out orders in our own record numbers.

Until it cools down, we’ll just have to keep the freezer, cooler and fridge stocked with the sorts of things that help busy bike-builders stay cool on the job, and sometimes off it.
