Quad Cross

Mo Bruno Roy racing CS in the sun

Quad Cross is one of those races, shop-sponsored, very local, that signifies the beginning of cross season. Though small and perhaps insignificant in the larger scheme of things, Quad Cross is huge for the devoted dirt racers in our area. For most, it’s the first test of legs and lungs. It’s where you find out how good/bad your summer was, and where you learn what you need to work on for the coming races. Oh, and it’s fun as hell.

Team Seven Cycles rider Mo Bruno Roy (Bob’s Red Mill p/b Seven Cycles) found out she’s in pretty good shape, taking the women’s Pro 1/2/3 race by a wide margin on her freshly refinished Mudhoney PRO.

Mo on the top podium

Our shipping/receiving dynamo, Nick Maggiore came through 39th in the Cat 3 Men’s heat, while Seven’s newest addition back in the shop, Dan Cariolo, was 20th in the Cat 4 Men’s race.

Joe Wignall took an exceptionally strong 5th in the Men’s Cat 4 35+ race. Can you say “podium hopeful?” And Team Seven Cycles’ Jason Devarrenes was 13th in the Single Speed Men’s.

It was a warm, sunny day for racing, perfect conditions for going fast. The course was dry and perfectly tacky, so not the mud-fest some were anticipating. There were fast flat sections, technical bits for the mountain bikers, a couple short, punchy climbs and a hard right-hander into the finish that rewarded riders with something left in the tank.

As always Quad put on a well-organized event, and the local cross community certainly rode away satisfied. Cross season is on.

Group of Nine – Shop Riding

riding selfie

Nine of us out on the shop ride last night. Cross bikes, road bikes, mountain bikes all together. Discovering a new not-so-secret trail and a new little-bit-secret dirt road to link up to our usual trail system, on the way to the path, and the rail bed, and the Battle Road. Kicking up dust the whole time. Trying to keep Dan, on his mountain bike, off the front. Tearing across fields, over bridges. Causing drivers to double-take at the pack of us, worming our way across town from one patch of dirt to the next.

Hammering up the last hill – to take the KOM points that no one awards and no one remembers, except the one who won – and then down into town to contend with cars and bright headlights. Matt S. says, “I don’t even like to ride bikes. I only came for the pizza and beer.”

McConneloug earns Third Place, Bruno Roy 13th at CrossVegas

Cross-Vegas 10

In the first major UCI Cyclocross race of the 2010-2011 season, Seven’s Mary McConneloug earned a spot on the podium and Maureen Bruno Roy took a solid 13th place. With fast and windy conditions for the elite women’s field, McConneloug claimed the holeshot and stayed with the lead group for the entire race on the dry, grassy course in Las Vegas.

“I was definitely at a disadvantage with all the Luna women working against me but I was ready to sprint for second place at the finish,” said McConneloug. “Amy went at the bottom of the hill and Georgia Gould was riding on the inside and I couldn’t get by her. There wasn’t much of a gap but that’s racing. I’m still so happy to be on the podium.”

Despite the fantastic result, Mary plans to resume mountain biking in Europe instead of continuing to race cyclocross this fall. Bruno Roy, on the other hand, is just getting started. After a third place at last weekend’s Green Mountain Cyclocross, Mo will be competing for the Planet Cup at the US Gran Prix of Cyclocross Race #1 in Madison, Wisconsin this coming weekend. Congratulations, and best of luck to both of them.

NE ‘Cross Championship Three-Peat for McConneloug

Team Seven Cycles’ Mary McConneloug earned her third consecutive Verge N.E. Cyclocross championship title having won all but one of the seven races that comprised the series. McConneloug sealed the deal this weekend (12/4) at round #7 in South Kingston, RI, trouncing the second place finisher by nearly two minutes.

The series win provides Mary with a healthy dose of confidence as she travels to Portland, Oregon this week to compete in the ‘cross National Championships on Sunday, December 11. Stay tuned for results.
